The Golden Globes 2012 was a sight to behold for a designer like myself. It seems that many of the stars decided to to go more risky , edgier, and it made a cornucopia of design inspiration for the NYC fashion community concerning upcoming trends. Lets get into a few of my favorite looks, and the heavenly bodies they were on.
The ageless Charlize Theron, who was nominated for best actress honors in the comedy & musical category for her work in the critically-acclaimed film “Young Adult,” looked simply beautiful in a flowing dress that wonderfully showcased her long legs. The lucky designer in this ethereal creation was none other than a vintage creation from Dior couture. Many designers, when they can’t decide on a designer,( trust me, it’s NOT as easy as it seems, the pressure is unbearable), decide to “reach back” into more “mature” collections, in order to find that fabulous look.
Fashion Power-house Angelina Jolie chose an overly-structured Atelier Versace gown. Many fashion critics hated this choice, and would have loved to see the star in something more “softer and feminine”, but I disagree. Angelina made her directorial debut this year with, “In the Land of Blood and Honey”, a rather lovely film depicting a love story set against the background of the Bosnian War, (many critics have panned her efforts, but critics are usually brain-dead, so go out and see it, its fabulous). I love the structured blood-red “collar” ( I feel a subliminal hint to her movie), that rise mid front, and carefully goes over her left shoulder. The color of the dress is a warm beige, that offsets the structured collar accents even more. Her accessories are minimal with diamond and ruby studs. Beautiful look, too bad the critics simply did not get it.
The vivacious ” Puss in Boots” star Salma Hayak wore a fashion forward gown from none other than Gucci Couture. It was hard to pay attention to anything other than her dazzling black-and-gold gown. The front of the gown was beaded with geometrical shapes, all in gold assents on black. Beautiful look.
Acting powerhouse ,Viola Davis looked simply ravishing in a Emilio Pucci gown that was a muted reddish burgundy. The gown was draped beautifully, grecian style , with a self braided waist. All culminated gracefully over the left shoulder. the star appeared in support of “The Help”, her latest critically acclaimed effort, and the “oscar birdies” are fluttering all around tinsle-town about her performance.
Latin Bombshell (VA VA VOOM), Sofia Vergara looked gorgeous in a smokey deep-hued Vera Wang gown. The ever-so-dreamy gown consisted of a ultra-form fitting bodice down to mid knee , accented with a flowing patterned chiffon, “mermaid -style” finish. The dress was “old hollywood-meets-modern”, and was so delicious to look at. Sofia’s up for best supporting actress in Modern Family, and her costar Eric Stonestreet is also nominated this year. The whole cast has a chance to win though, since the comedy is a contender in the best TV comedy category.
